San Juan Island
We feel grateful everyday to call San Juan Island our home. Blessed to be able to live and practice architecture in such a stunning natural setting. Every project seems to be in its own special Island environment. We have designed homes on many of the islands Mountaintops, Valleys and Shoreline. Our specialty is designing a home that fits and responds to this spectacular natural environment. I have thoroughly enjoyed raising my two daughters on this island with my wife Vail a practicing Real Estate Broker.
Design Build Partnerships
Our design process has been influenced by years of experience leading the design build team for "Ravenhill Construction" the award winning San Juan Island construction firm. A decade spent practicing the art of designing, budgeting and managing custom home build has brought a complete vision of the design build process. Out team oriented approach with owner and builder has allowed us to bring a level clarity and ease to the construction and realization of each home. Habitat Designs llc and the current owners of "Ravenhill" continue to closely partner and collaborate on custom design builds. Our work is enhanced by our close collaboration with Joe Cooper Designs. Responsible for cabinetry, casework and custom furniture. Joe brings a level of excellence and detail to any project that he is involved with. Our collaborative team approach to interiors and design resolution results in a fit and finish attenuated for each client.
Green Building
We are certified as a "Built Green" . Knowledgeable in green home building and design efficiency. As well, Jonathan was responsible for leading the "Natural Balance Home" to a "LEED" Platinum certification. The highest and most intensive level of green building certification in the world. Habitat Designs is also a "Greenshores" for homes verifier that specializes in green waterfront shoreline development.
We love envisaging new custom homes. However, we particularly love revisioning existing homes. Reusing, updating and improving an existing homes functionality and energy performance fits with our Green Building design sensibilities.
Community Development
Habitat Designs has also supported and guided the San Juan Island Home trust in certifying their Sunrise development to the Evergreen Standard of home efficiency.
The Brickworks Community Stage project is underway. Our newest community outreach project will provide a much needed music venue in the heart of Friday Harbor. A joint design venture with Peter Kilpatrick. See the progress here @ fhbrickworks.com

From the beginning, our collaboration with Jonathan Hu ( Habitat Designs llc) on design was a fun an illuminating adventure. We wanted to create a structure that would coexist naturally with the oak groves, meadows, and rocky terrain of the land. Jonathan was able to juggle all the variables and my strong opinions in mind, while gently correcting course to the realities of home construction.

Jonathan seemed to intuitively 'get' us from the start; having seen some of his previous projects we knew he shared our design aesthetic, so the actual design process came together fairly quickly.
We found him responsive, resourceful & very easy to work with. He is extremely good at coming up with innovative solutions to any problems arising during the iterative process. And somehow still making them look cool!
